The tilting of the balance between bone formation and bone resorption is a natural biological phenomenon. This can result in osteoporosis, which increases the risk of bone fractures.
The densitometer available at our health centre provides a high-quality image of bone mineral density in the entire body. The most important sources of information regarding the condition of bones are the femur (thigh bone) and the lowest 4 vertebra of the backbone (spine). The use of the densitometer involves a smaller amount of radiation than an average dental X-ray (only one hundredth of it). The machine immediately compares the results with the average values of the relevant age group (skin colour, sex), producing an on-the-spot diagnosis. The condition of the bones in our body is able to change in the space of approximately a year. The stability of our truss structure is one of the most important criteria for our health. The balance between bone formation and bone resorption tilts over the age of 60 in males and after menopause in females, which may result in osteoporosis (bone rarefaction), an invisible process without pain or symptoms, which we only notice when a painful bone fracture occurs. Thus, once a year it is worth paying special attention to the condition of our bones.
